What is a chamber of commerce portal?
A chamber of commerce portal is where local businesses apply to join, staff approve each new member, residents browse a public business directory, and members get the events calendar and renewal reminders. It follows the Directory pattern: who belongs, their profiles and sign-ups. Pory generates it from a plain-English description, with a login for each role (member business and chamber staff) that shows only what that role should see, and flat pricing with unlimited member businesses.
What it does
Local businesses sign themselves up instead of posting a paper form
Joining the chamber meant a PDF application, a phone call and a fortnight of silence. In Pory a business owner creates their own account from the chamber's site, lands in the member business role, and adds the details staff need to approve them. The office stops chasing missing pages of an application form.
Chamber staff approve or decline each new business, reason attached
Applications waited in a tray until the monthly board meeting, and applicants heard nothing in between. In Pory staff open each application, check the business and its category, and approve or decline it with a note on the record saying why. Applicants stop ringing to ask whether their form arrived.
Residents browse member businesses as cards on a public page
The member directory was a printed booklet plus a web page someone updated when they remembered. In Pory the directory is a public gallery of member businesses, each card showing the name, category and a line about what they do. A new bakery can be found the week it joins, not in next year's booklet.
Networking breakfasts, workshops and the awards night on one chamber calendar
Event dates went out in a monthly email that members read, meant to act on, and lost. In Pory staff put every breakfast, workshop and council briefing on a calendar members can open whenever they're planning the week. Fewer members ask the office whether the breakfast is this Thursday or next.
Member businesses get a nudge ahead of their renewal date
Renewals were chased by phone in one busy fortnight each spring, and a few businesses always slipped through. In Pory each member business carries its own renewal date, and its contact gets a reminder in the portal and by email ahead of it. Staff spend that fortnight on events instead of phone calls.
